Please find below the latest information regarding the Milton Interchange improvement scheme. The contractor is currently setting up the compound and preparing the site for the introduction of full traffic management systems on the A34 and the A4130 roundabout. The latest information regarding the Featherbed Lane and Hagbourne Hill improvement schemes is also included.
Traffic management on the A34 from Monday 26 January and Monday 16 February 2015
The next stage of traffic management for the Milton Interchange improvement scheme is to start from Monday 26 January 2015. Preparatory work on the A34 will be undertaken, under night-time closures, to install CCTV, adapt lane markings, remove permanent safety barriers and construct a hardened crossover.
When this has been completed, a full traffic management system will be implemented 24 hours a day, from Monday 16 February 2015. Please see the plan attached to this letter.
Oxfordshire County Council has been working closely with the Highways Agency to design and approve arrangements that will ensure that the A34 and the A4130 roundabout below the A34 remain open while work is being done.
Traffic travelling south (towards Newbury) on the A34 will be subject to a 30mph speed limit in the vicinity of the work. The left hand lane will be diverted down the slip road, around the A4130 roundabout, and back up onto the A34. This arrangement has been introduced at the request of the Highways Agency in order to ensure that they have the space necessary to grit the A34 in the event of icy conditions. Traffic flow information indicates that normally at peak traffic hours almost half of the southbound traffic on the A34 at Milton leaves the A34 on this slip road.
Traffic travelling north (towards Oxford) on the A34 will be subject to a 40mph speed limit in the vicinity of the work, within narrowed lanes.
Traffic management on the A4130 roundabout.
Two lanes of traffic will be maintained around the roundabout throughout the work. Areas of the third lane will be coned off as required to enable work to be carried out. Please see the plans here and here.
Considerate Constructors Scheme
This site is registered with the national Considerate Constructors Scheme, which requires the contractor to implement their codes of considerate practice on site. That will involve being considerate to businesses and the wider community, being aware of the environmental impact of the site, keeping the working site clean, ensuring there is a consistent flow of communication and operating safe working practices.
Featherbed Lane and Hagbourne Hill Improvement Schemes
Road works will be carried out on Featherbed Lane between the A417 Wantage Road and the A4130 Abingdon Road from Monday 26 January 2015.
The work includes carriageway resurfacing, road widening, strengthening of the edge of carriageway and drainage works. The road works are expected to last for nine weeks and will be carried out under a complete road closure of Featherbed Lane.
Work will also be carried out at Hagbourne Hill. This will affect the full length of Hagbourne Hill from the A417 at the north end to Townsend at the Chilton end. The works are due to start on Monday 26 January 2015.
The work includes carriageway resurfacing, strengthening of the edge of carriageway and drainage works. The road works will be carried out under a complete road closure of Hagbourne Hill and are expected to last for nine weeks. The first phase of the work will be in the section between the A417 and Chilton Road.
